John Russell is a Scottish artist, living on a farm in Northern England. Surrounded by wide open space, and inspired by the openness of his local landscape, he depicts British landscapes combining a mix of the traditional with a contemporary finish.
Brooding skies frame a dramatically lit foreground and the finish is enhanced by a gloss resin coating. John uses a dramatically long ‘landscape’ format to convey a sense of wide open skies and wilderness in his paintings, which often consist mainly of skies and open space.
From Yorkshire Farms to Highland crofts, Lakeland cottages to Cornish mines, rugged barren scenes are his favourite subject matter. Stylish, original and striking, these are traditional paintings with a modern twist; his paintings would find a place in everything from a traditional cottage to a ultra modern loft space.
